Ontario Women Anglers

Ontario Women Anglers is an organization that provides a variety of programs aimed at getting more women and children outdoors and involved in fishing. Through anglers’ education workshops, hands-on activities, fishing excursions, community events and mentorship, Ontario Women Anglers provides opportunities for both new and experienced female anglers to increase their fishing skills and to network with others that share this passion. Interview with Yvonne Brown, President of the organization.

In September 2012, I was invited to the OFAH Women’s Outdoor Weekend to be a fishing instructor at an event where 80 women participate in activities like archery, high ropes climbing and target shooting, to name just a few. The women were very much engaged in the fishing activity as well as during the Introduction to Fishing seminar that preceded. From my interactions with the participants, I realized that there were many women interested in learning how to fish, improving their current skills to become more independent, and to become more familiar with the sport so they could take their children, friends and other family members out on the water… and that they wanted to learn from other women.
